Tuberculosis in Lesotho
Lesotho is a mountainous country located entirely within the borders of South Africa. It is home to more than 2 million people and has one of the highest HIV burdens in the world. The co-infection with the multi-drug resistant Tuberculosis is the leading cause of death among people with HIV infection. The importance of TB cannot be underestimated. Because it is transmitted through the air, unlike most other opportunistic infections, once it spreads in the HIV/AIDS population, tuberculosis can be passed on to other people in the general population.
The Open Society Institute proposed to build a model treatment and training program in Lesotho against this health disaster. This model is to be used as the basis for the to be developed guidelines against expansion and for better treatments for the HIV-TB patients in sub-Saharan Africa and elsewhere.
