For Pep Bonet, “the worst expectations are those held by people”. The driving force behind this recent arrival on photography’s Olympus is the possibility of living new experiences due to his competitive spirit and constant search for challenges. Born in southem Mallorca, a quiet place with sandbanks that remain untouched, Bonet photographs Africa’s suffering due to its contrast and his complete ignorance of that Word. He left his island to follow the windsurf at the age of fifteen and settled in Tarifa.
He won Spain`s windsufing championship twice and also passed though Hawaii. That is how he began to cultivate his spirit of aventure, his ability to survive under any conditions and how he learned to deal with people older than he was. At the age of twienty-three, he went to Amsterdam where he decided to be a photografer alter visiting an exhibition by Ed van der Elsken. In recent years, and since he was selected in 2002 for the Word Press Photo Masterclass and assigned a work on faith in post-war Sierra Leone, he has won some of the most highly competitive awards such as Fotopress, Visa pour L’image and Ziveren Camera Holland. Two of these awards have been very importat for his career: the W.eugene Smith Grant in Humanistic Photography and de Word Press Photo.
